Microdermabrasion Aftercare: 7 Simple Steps to Help Your Skin Recover

Freshly exfoliated skin needs care, not a stronger skincare routine. Microdermabrasion removes surface dead skin cells, so your skin may feel temporarily sensitive afterwards. Your therapist’s individual instructions should always take priority; these general tips can help you care for your skin.
1. Keep cleansing gentle
Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid scrubs, cleansing brushes and vigorous rubbing while your skin settles. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel instead of dragging it across your face.
2. Apply a suitable moisturiser
A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser can help reduce dryness and support the skin barrier. Avoid experimenting with several new products immediately after treatment, especially if your skin feels tight or sensitive.
3. Be diligent with sun protection
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and follow the product’s directions. Reapply as directed, especially outdoors. Seek shade and consider a hat when spending time in strong sunlight. Sun protection matters every day, and especially when skin may be more sensitive.
4. Pause potentially irritating products as advised
Ask your therapist when to resume retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide or other active products. The right pause depends on your skin and the treatment intensity; do not restart until your skin feels comfortable and your provider’s guidance allows it.
5. Avoid heat and friction if you feel sensitive
If your skin is warm, red or tender, avoid activities that noticeably worsen the discomfort and follow your therapist’s advice about exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot showers. Do not pick, scratch or rub the treated area.
6. Keep your routine simple
For the first few days—or for the period your therapist recommends—prioritise gentle cleansing, moisturising and sun protection rather than trying new masks, peels or intensive treatments.
7. Know when to ask for help
Mild, short-lived sensitivity can occur, but severe or worsening pain, blistering, significant swelling, spreading redness or signs of infection are not something to ignore. Contact your treatment provider or a healthcare professional for advice.
Is microdermabrasion suitable for everyone?
Not necessarily. Certain skin conditions, active irritation, infections or recent procedures may mean the treatment should be postponed or avoided. Share your skin history and current products during the consultation.
